As you may know, Japan has loads of diverse idol groups each with its different themes. This time its a fusion of hip hop and idoru music. Yeap, a hiphop idol group! It may sound strange but this formula kinda worked for lyrical school. Not only that, they have actual big name hiphop music producers i.e. "tofubeats" (the one responsible for Hitomi Arai's Come On Honey) producing their music. This group started out as tengal6 and are part of the T-Palette Records label. T-Palette in turn is a japanese record label which a specializes in idols and its a subsidiary of Japan's Tower Records division. During their run as tengal6, the group was quite well received and they undergo a name change to the current "lyrical school". They underwent some member changes as well. Original members Mariko and Erika graduated, new members Minan and Hina were added.
They were one of the performers during last year's Tokyo Idol Festival. I remembered taking a break near the Festival Stage area when they appeared. It was my first encounter with them and was truly impressed. Their delivery was good and the fans were particularly interesting. Heck, there was a big sized dude who actually surfed in crowd. Whoa! Even at the goods area, which they made an appearance, its a was a large turnout of fans. They were have quite a fan following. It rubbed onto me ever since and I put them as one of my favourite acts.
A lyrical school performance

lyrical school are not the only hiphop idol group around. Theres Rhymeberry and their current lineup actually has quite a chaotic makeover. Regardless these groups have quite a following and perhaps the nature of its theme resonates well to both idol and casual fans.
From an interesting theme to crowd surfing to official shop, why not give hiphop idol music a try? ^_^
