SPW Wrestlingcity Asia! Singapore's Wrestling Finest!

Region's best wrestlers duke it out in matches held at SPW (Singapore Pro Wrestling) Wrestlingcity Asia held last Friday. Fans, no matter they're purists or casuals, were greeted with a wrestling extravaganza chucked in this little known corner of Toa Payoh. The atmosphere was lively and boy, it was entertaining!

The venue held at Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Associations building (Yes, the name is quite a handful). The match cards revealed and they include tag matches, singles and even an elimination match. It was full house and this bodes well to regional wrestling scene. Even WWE's regional General Manager Chris Marsh is in attendance!

The Venue

The Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Associations is actually a place where they organize activities for the various Chinese clans in Singapore with its history stretching back to 1985. In regards to wrestling, this spot was where SPW held previous shows such as PROVE 5 and Hardcore Island. Previously SPW held events in Kampong Ubi community centre. I guess this venue could be SPW's permanent home for shows.

The indoor hall was used and converted into a wrestling arena. Event goers can opt to buy SPW, Gatoh Move or HKWF goods before show starts. Those who bought ringside tickets can opt to buy merchandise beforehand or after the event.

I saw the 'wrestling idol' Riho and had a photo taken with her!

Match Cards

The matches for the evening were as followed (all images here belong to SPW):

Dennis the LadyKiller & Gavyn G VS Dr Gore & Sayn RH

The opening match features the mismatched duo of Dr Gore and Sayn RH. The Ladykiller & Gavyn G enters this match from a losing streak. They yet to win a match in SPW! All that changed however when Gavyn pinned 'abang wrestling' Sayn RH and they registered their first win!

The Arsenal Affi VS Black Cat Paksa

Both technical sound wrestlers from Singapore and Thailand battle it out. Paksa is intimidating and dishes out muay thai kicks and chops. Whereas Affi does manoeuvres which defies gravity. Match goes back to back and ends with Affi winning.

Bad Company (P-Nutz & Golem Thai) VS GST (Dave Vindictus and Glorious Greg)

This is a special match as both are heel (bad guy) wrestlers. Ring veterans GST face off with Gatoh Move's Bad Company. Bad Company starts by entering the ring doing staredowns to crowd. While they are at it, GST comes out and a fight spills outside the ring. It was pure pandemonium as the action spills into the audiences, with chairs and bodies flying here and there. Once the action moves to the ring, we were treated with a spectacular display of hard hittng slams and spots. Match ends with Bad Company winning.

Team Outer Space VS Eurasian Dragon, SGT Nick, Mighty Arrow

Based on the pre-match promos, this was supposed to be 3 on 3 match until Outer Space called out Black Mask. The Eurasian Dragon, dont want to be outdone, calls out his mystery partner. He is none other than the high flying SGT Nick. Team Outer Space consists of HKWF wrestlers Hoholun, tag team The Man Bros and the enigmatic Black Mask. Match ends with Team Outer Space winning.

Riho/Alexis Lee VS Emi Sakura/Tyra Rusamee

The match which alot been looking out for. Its a female tag-team match and it features veteran Emi Sakura and the ever cute, ever versatile Riho! The crowd were wow-ed by energetic display of both tag teams. Match ends with the veteran Emi Sakura & Tyra Rusamee winning the match.

Power Warrior VS Hoshi Tango

Japanese-Argentine ex-Sumo Wrestler Hoshi Tango made his debut in a SPW ring.  His opponent? A power ranger rip-off in the form of Power Warrior! Accompanied to the ring by 'General Manager' Carl Hella, he was touted as a wrestler with great potential, much to the amusement of the crowd. A mismatch of size, Power Warrior resorts to keeping Hoshitango out of the ring to win via countout.

Hoshitango is MASSIVE! Dwarfing the Power Warrior

Masa Takanashi VS Andreuw 'The Statement' Tang

DDT wrestler Masa Takanashi challenges Andreuw 'The Statement' Tang for his title after wining the bout held in Gatoh Move recently. Thus we have this match with the SPW Southeast Asian title on the line. A glorious display of technical skills and grapples, the match goes back and forth. Although Masa works on The Statement's legs, he still wont give up even he's caught in his leglock. Loads of high spots and frantic action between the two challengers trying to outdo each other. However, Masa Takanashi gets the better of The Statement and won this bout. Everyone gave a standing ovation and Masa Takanashi hugs almost everyone around the ring (Yeap, I got hugged too).

Before the bout

The Aftermath

Masa Tanahashi winning the belt means for the first time in history a wrestler from DDT is named SPW champion. Sure our local star lost the match, however this turn of events brings prestige to our title as Masa might defend it in his own promotion. Imagine the scores of people seeing the championship belt and acknowledge that our own wrestling promotion exists! In the wrestling fan's POV, this changing of belt opens the door to loads of 'What's next?' scenario. Will Andreuw invoke a rematch clause? Will title exchange hands on foreign soil? Will another local challenger steps up and get the belt back? All these scenarios are tantalizing enough for the local fans to want MORE!

The Statement with his belt. Well not for long

The next wrestling centric event (or part of) will be the upcoming CharaExpo this June where Bushiroad once again invites NJPW to take part.

Took photos with Emi Sakura again!
